The Self-Predicted Death of Astrologer Grant Lewi

I love it when people ask me interesting questions that keep me challenged. This was the best in a long time. Thanks, John.

The question was "What did famous astrologer Grant Lewi see in his chart that enabled him to predict his own death?" Reportedly, Lewi used only transits to make what he called his "projections," incorporating neither progressions, directions, tertiaries, nor harmonics. Therefore, the task of answering this question must also be limited to the methods Lewi used.

I doubt there are any astrologers who don’t know who Grant Lewi was, but in case any non-astrologers happen across this post, he was one of the fathers of modern astrology. He began his career as an English professor, but became so absorbed in the astrology lessons he received from his mother-in-law, that he quit teaching and became a full-time astrologer and author of several books: Heaven Knows What, Astrology for the Millions, and two novels. He wrote for, then became the editor of, Dell Horoscope magazine and also The Astrologer. One of the most important contributions for which we’re in his debt is the Saturn cycle of career success.

Lewi predicted his own death of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 49, "to the minute," according to Astrowiki, which places the time of death at 12 noon on July 15, 1951. Wikipedia gives the date of July 14, and also July 15, however no particular time is cited.

Here's a link to his bio on astro.com.

In trying to recreate the same chart Lewi may have used, I had many questions.

First off, according to the Astro Databank, Lewi’s time of birth is given as 8:30 AM "from memory," and rated "A" by Lois Rodden. However, Marc Edmund Jones, often referred to as "the Dean of Modern Astrology," in his book The Sabian Symbols in Astrology, in Chapter 13, page 355, gives Lewi’s birth time as 8:35 AM. He opens the chapter with several pages devoted to the importance of accurate birth data. While my copy is a third printing, published in 1993, the data was first published in 1953. This is a small but important difference, and should be solvable by creating daily harmonic charts for the date of death, using each birth time and seeing which more accurately reflects the death and its cause. Although I’ve done that and the results are posted here,

Grant Lewi Death Harmonic Comparison

I would still like to have more dates with which to test the harmonics. Precious little about Lewi is available online. We have a year of marriage and years of book publications, but no exact date for any of them.

In addition to the birth time dilemma, the time of death at noon sounds rounded off to me, and that is a time often used by astrologers when the real time is unknown (sunrise is the other). No one provides any certification of the time of death, or gives any insight into where this "official time" came from. But it’s what we’ve got, so it’s what we’ll use.

The natal chart provided on Astro.com (a/k/a Astrowiki) uses the Placidus house system with equal houses. But enlarge the chart, and you’ll see the houses are anything but equal. I played with both house systems, and prefer the equal house system because it puts Pisces on the 8th house cusp and eliminates interceptions. On the other hand, the Placidus house system puts Aquarius on the cusp of the 8th house, and the sudden nature of Uranus is more descriptive of the cause of death. Many astrologers use different house systems for different kinds of charts, and with no clear idea of which Lewi may have used for his prediction, I went in search of an answer.

I happen to own an old copy of Astrology for the Millions, so I perused it and was reminded that Lewi liked to use the nodes of the planets, as well as the nodes of the moon. Below is Lewi’s natal chart in the Placidus house system using the most widely accepted time of birth. I’m not sure I accept the time as accurate, but if I’m going to attempt an answer, I should probably work with the same data most others are using. I think if you click on the chart that Blogger will pop out an enlarged version of it. My apologies in advance to any graphic artists out there for all the crumbs left behind due to the many times the charts had to be re-saved.

Just for starters, probably the first thing that brought Lewi’s attention to the probability of his own demise was a solar eclipse in March 1951 (below). It fell into his 8th house of "destruction" as he called it, in square to his natal sun, ruler of his ascendant. In addition, it squared his Uranus - Pluto opposition. Pluto is the planet of death and transformation, and ruler of Scorpio intercepted in his 4th house of endings. Uranus rules his 8th house of death. One more aspect that may have alerted Lewi was a trine to the natal moon in its own sign, and which both ruled and occupied his 12th house, the last of the three houses of endings. We tend to think of trines as being easy and effortless, and that's true, but it's true for both good and ill.

The lunar eclipse that followed two weeks later at 2 Libra fell into his 2nd house. It squared his natal Neptune (which would have been the ruler of his 8th house in the equal house system), and his natal Mercury, the dispositor of his Gemini sun.

Lewi would also have checked his lunar returns and found that his July return (below) coincided with a new moon, and that the return moon fell into his 8th house, ruled the 8th house, and was the final dispositor of the return chart.

Additionally, Jupiter, the chart ruler, and Neptune, ruler of the 4th house of endings, formed a T-square to the return sun in the 8th house.

In his current solar return (below), which took place June 8, 1951, 29 Aries 59 rose on the ascendant. Be sure to watch for critical degrees, Aries points, and anaretic degrees on the angles in your own charts. The moon’s nodes squared Mars, the chart ruler.

Let’s take a look at those planetary nodes that Lewi favored.

The center wheel is, of course, the natal chart. The outer wheel holds the transits for the time of death. In red are the natal planetary nodes, although I couldn’t fit the text in, so it’s as close as possible while trying to make it still readable. Because the planets stay in the same constant orbit, their nodes barely move and will be only minutes away from the positions they held at birth fifty years before. The positions in the table below are for the north nodes of the planets, and as usual in all but harmonic charts, the south nodes are directly opposite.

If you’d like to find the positions for your own birth, there’s a fantastic generator here:

So that you don’t have to keep scrolling up, here’s the chart again. Interestingly, Lewi was born in a period following three eclipses, and died in a period sandwiched between two others, but explaining the Saros Cycle and prenatal eclipses is beyond the scope of this post.

So far, we know Lewi would have seen the solar eclipse in his 8th house afflicting his natal sun, ruler of his ascendant. Then he probably would have begun looking at the new moons each following month.

In April 1951, the new moon at 15 Aries 50 conjoined one of his prenatal solar eclipses at 17 Aries 48. Transiting Neptune at 16 Libra opposed it, but also trined his natal sun by one minute of orb. In addition, Neptune squared Jupiter.

In May, the new moon at 14 Taurus 44 conjoined the other prenatal solar eclipse at 16 Taurus 25.

In June, the new moon at 13 Gemini 15 conjoined his natal sun as well as the north node of his natal Uranus (13 Gemini 34), ruler of his 8th house. It also conjoined the north node of his natal Venus (15 Gemini 48), ruler of his 4th house (the first House of Endings), and squared the natal part of fortune at 12 Virgo.

On July 4, 1951, eleven days before his death, the new moon at 11 Cancer 32 conjoined the transiting Uranus, which again, is ruler of the 8th (the second House of Endings), which Lewi referred to as the "house of destruction."

In August, the new moon was at 09 Leo 49, exactly conjunct his natal ascendant and the north node of his natal Neptune. An eclipse later that month would occur at 23 Aquarius 25, which made no aspects to his natal chart nor any of the planetary nodes he would have been watching. So maybe he backtracked to see what was happening in July.

He was very interested in Saturn cycles, so maybe he looked there first. Transiting Saturn at 27 Virgo was deep in the "obscure" period and exactly trine his natal Saturn at 27 Capricorn, which ruled his 6th house of health, so no problem there. It was just past an inconjunct to his natal midheaven.

Transiting Uranus, ruler of the 8th (the second of the Houses of Endings), which has just been supercharged by the new moon in Cancer on July 4, and which recently entered his 12th house (the third House of Endings), conjoined the north node of his natal Jupiter. Jupiter only rules the natal 5th house, and is the ancient ruler of Pisces on the 9th, but it’s in mutual reception with Uranus, ruler of the 8th in the natal chart. That might be significant. Transiting Jupiter at 13 Aries would also have squared his natal Chiron at 13 Capricorn in his 6th house of health, but he would not have known that because Chiron wasn’t discovered until 1977. At this point, if he entertained the possibility of his demise, he would likely assume it would be sudden and surprising, like lightning, due to the nature of Uranus (ruling the 8th house). He knows, after all that his health is fine, as Saturn in his chart appears to confirm it.

He would probably have checked Pluto next, and we know he associated it with destruction, as he made note of it in Astrology for the Millions. Transiting Pluto at 18 Leo 38 was separating from a trine to the prenatal solar eclipse in Aries, and a square with the one at 16 Taurus, but it’s only ten minutes shy of a partile square with the north node of his natal Mars, the ruler of his midheaven and the co-ruler of Scorpio intercepted in the 4th house of endings. Pluto sextiles its own place, which isn’t harmful, but is basically insignificant. It trines natal Uranus, ruler of the 8th house, and opposes Jupiter, again activating the mutual reception between Uranus and Jupiter.

Personally, I’m surprised that the transiting moon’s nodes make no particularly interesting aspects to the natal chart other than the conjunction to the natal part of fortune. They do, however make trine and sextile aspects to transiting Uranus, which was supercharged by that new moon on July 4th, eleven days before his death.

Lewi was undoubtedly aware of those long-term transits of the outer planets, as we all are in our own charts. So next he would have searched for aspects made by the faster, inner, personal planets. Transiting Jupiter at 13 Aries 33 was only one minute from an exact sextile to the north node of his natal Uranus, another activation of their mutual reception.

Transiting Mars, which Lewi thought of as having a destructive nature, makes no aspects to his natal planets. Mars is also unaspected in his nativity. At just short of 8 degrees, transiting Mars conjoins the natal north node of Jupiter at 9 Cancer 27.

Venus, ruler of Taurus intercepted in the 10th house, and the 4th house where Libra is on the cusp, makes no harmful aspects to the natal chart, so I’m going to skip it, as Lewi most likely would have. Ditto for transiting Mercury. That leaves the transiting sun and moon.

The transiting sun at 22 Cancer conjoined the natal eastpoint, which is a secondary ascendant, technically where the ascendant would be if he had been born at the equator instead of Albany, New York. It also conjoined the natal north node of Saturn. And finally, the moon trined the ascendant.

At noon on the day of death, the transiting vertex, which is a date with destiny, and which moves at a rate similar to the part of fortune, moved into a sextile (opportunity) to the natal moon which occupied and ruled the 12th house of endings, and had been so revealing in the lunar return.

In Honor of Dymock Brose, an Extraordinary Astrologer

Dymock Brose, a most generous-hearted Australian astrologer who spent decades teaching us all about harmonic charts, passed at the age of 95 on March 11, 2014. He is survived by his beautiful wife, Marguerite, who will continue his work. She said that he had lost his sight and hearing and passed gently and peacefully from heart failure. With her assistance, he presented lessons every single week for a dozen years of which I am aware, and I'm sure many more of which I'm not. A light has truly gone out in the world. The knowledge and expertise he took with him can never be replaced, but we are fortunate that Marguerite is willing to carry on with it.

Here is the age harmonic chart for his passing.

95. 5064873

He taught us to find the most important feature of the chart which is usually, but not always, the closest conjunction. In this case, the most important feature is the Saturn / Mars / Pluto conjunction in the 8th house of death, squaring Jupiter, ruler of the ascendant (he used the ancient rulers). Uranus, ruler of the 12th house of hospitals (and his natal 6th house of illness) conjuncts the 4th house of endings. Mercury (ruler of his natal sun and midheaven) quincunxes the moon's north node in Leo, sign of the heart, on the cusp of the 6th house of illness and sextiles the south node on the cusp of the 9th house of the longest journey of all. Venus, ruler of the 8th house of death trines Neptune, ruler of the ascendant, indicating a peaceful passing. He deserved no less.

Ted Turner Mars in Libra

Ted Turner was rushed to the hospital today with appendicitis.

Ted Turner, Natal Chart
Turner has a very strong Pluto in his chart. Pluto is the planet of wealth, thus, plutocrats. It's in mutual reception with his natal sun in Scorpio, and the two are in trine to each other, feeding each other in mutual cooperation. Pluto is the ruler of his 12th house of hospitals, where his sun (life force, individuality) is located, and the sun is the ruler of the 9th house of foreign countries and long distances, where he and the hospital are currently located.

His natal chart holds a yod between his natal

  • Mars in Libra (under fire with the upcoming cardinal Grand Cross of April) (diplomacy, passive-aggressiveness, partnerships, marriage and equality)
  • Mercury (communication) in Sagittarius (reaching far and hitting the mark) in a wide conjunction with the ascendant
  • Uranus in Taurus at the apex. Uranus is the planet of  technology and telecommunications, placed in Taurus, the money sign.
We're going to be seeing more people who have their natal Mars in Libra in the news as the Grand Cross takes shape in mid April. Take note that transiting Mars just turned stationary retrograde a few days ago, and its conjunction to Turner's natal moon was the trigger of this event.

Ted Turner, appendicitis transits
There are quite a few aspects to the natal here from today's transits, but those that describe the event are transiting Mars (pain, wounding, cutting, sharp objects) conjunct his natal moon (ruler of the 8th house of surgery) in the 11th house of sudden events. Transiting Saturn (suffering, loss, worry, restriction) in Scorpio (surgery) conjuncts his natal sun (life, identity) in the 12th house of hospitals, ruler of the 9th house of foreign countries and long-distances. The transiting moon in the 6th house of illness. His natal Saturn / Mars opposition (slow burn, stop go stop go stop go) in angular houses is being challenged by the T-Square that's forming a Grand Cross, and can be affected repeatedly almost all the way through July 2014.

Below is Turner's age harmonic chart for today.
75.29798

There is a Grand Trine between Mercury, Neptune and the moon, but that's not the dominating feature here. Mercury (health) in Aquarius (unexpected) in the 12th house (hospitals) is tied to the 8th house (surgery). Mercury also represents messengers and the media, Aquarius also represents friends, and the 12th house also represents solitude and privacy. It trines Neptune (anesthesia, hospitals) in Gemini (communication, media) in the 4th house of the end of the matter. Both Mercury and Neptune are trined by the moon, ruler of the 6th house of health and illness in the 8th house of surgery. The moon is conjunct the north node, a beneficent aspect, and both are in Libra, the sign associated with the midsection of the body (usually, but not necessarily limited to the kidneys and intestines.) But that's still not the significant part of this age harmonic chart.

The significant part is that all of the following planets and indicators fall into the 8th house of surgery:

  • The sun--The vitality and life force is opposed by Mars, planet of cutting and blood.
  • Uranus--Ruler of the ascendant, the chart ruler, and representative of sudden, unexpected events
  • The north node of the moon--a turning point in life, a matter of great significance.
  • The moon--the "other" light. The sun, moon and ruler of the ascendant are three most vital parts of any chart. This one squares Jupiter--in and ruling--the 11th house of sudden events and twists of fate.
Saturn--planet of suffering, loss and restriction is conjunct the 8th house cusp. All house cusps are particularly sensitive in harmonic charts. Saturn is the ruler of the 12 house of confinement, seclusion and institutions. It is squared by a retrograde Venus on the cusp of the 11th house of sudden events and twists of fate. Venus rules the 4th house of home +  the end of matters, as well as the 9th house of long-distances and foreign countries.

Mars is opposed to the sun, but also inconjuncts the natal Pluto - the other ruler of surgery.

What Does This Mean? A Guide to Charts

Need a little help understanding a specific thing in the chart? Here's a guide that will make it easy! Just click on the subject you want to learn about (these are a work in progress and may be incomplete).

The Ascendant (also known as the rising sign and the cusp of the 1st House)

The Descendant (also known as the cusp of the 7th House)

The Midheaven (also known as the cusp of the 10th house)

The IC (also known as the cusp of the 4th house) It is the first house of Endings.

2nd House of money, resources and possessions

3rd House of communication, transportation, elementary education, the immediate environment, siblings

5th House of creativity, both human and furry children, romance, risks, gambling, games, entertainment, recreation, sports

6th House of service, duty, obligation, work, health, nutrition, daily grind and small undomesticated animals.

8th House of sex, death, regeneration, surgery, crime, and other people's money. It is the second house of Endings.

9th house of the elevated mind, higher education, philosophy, religion, law, medicine, literature and publishing, the search for meaning in life, long-distance travel. foreign people, places, languages and cultures, imports / exports, immigration / emigration

11th House of friends, social groups, associations, clubs, diversity, what we have in common and how we are different, new possibilities, surprising experiences, the sudden and accidental, things beyond our control and out of our hands, things that can radically alter our priorities, good fortune, unexpected gains, lucky breaks, lottery wins, hopes and wishes and whether or not we’ll get them. The house of astrology.

12th House of intangibles and things that are invisible, unseen and untouchable such as ghosts and spirits, sleepwalking, dreams, nightmares, sleep disorders, and astral projection. This is the house secrets, sorrows, self-undoing, grief, things that are hidden or clandestine, places of seclusion, isolation or confinement such as jails, hospitals, asylums, convents, abbeys, monasteries and zoos. It is the subconscious and collective unconscious. It is the third house of Endings.

The Moon's Nodes are associated with the past (south node) and future (north node). They indicate turning points in a situation and are often karmic indicators. The South Node is about the past (even past lives), about what is familiar, comfortable and emotionally safe. It is considered negative and sometimes malefic. The North Node is about the future, the unknown, and what frightens us. It's about growth and pushing the boundaries. It is the leap we are supposed to take. It's considered positive and usually benefic. Each is in a sign and a house and are VERY important.

Wendy Davis, Mercury Rx, and Midnight at the Filibuster

On June 25, 2013, as I watched Senator Wendy Davis (D-Texas) stand and speak for eleven hours to lead Texas Democrats on a filibuster to block Senate Bill 5 - legislation that would create new abortion restrictions and close down 42 women’s reproductive health clinics, leaving only 5 in the entire state - I worried how Mercury’s retrograde station would affect the outcome.

Mercury, also known as Hermes, messenger of the gods, has
dominion over all transportation and communication. If the bill passed, the poorest women in Texas, those in El Paso, Brownsville, Abilene, Lubbock and Amarillo, would have the farthest to travel for their medical care. Those in El Paso would have to drive just less than 600 miles – an eight-hour trip each way.

But more immediately, I was concerned about communication issues because Mercury represents every form of it, from the most basic elementary education with its books, pencils, papers, reading and writing; proceeding on through to mail, contracts, leases, deeds, agreements, wills, appointments, phones, novels, newspapers, blog posts, legislative bills, speeches and filibustering…just to begin.

Our ability to say what we mean and to mean what we say is less acute during the retrograde period, as well as our ability to discriminate. Our critical faculties are dimmed as well–in most cases. There are exceptions to the rule, but nearly always, it leads to confusion and uncertainty. Mercury is prominent in the charts of people who are woefully misinformed, like Texas Representative Jody Laubenberg, whose Mercury is in slow, methodical Taurus conjunct the south node (a malefic). She mumbled her words and seemed anything but a wealth of knowledge or voice of authority. In addition, she was under the misnomer that a rape kit could end a pregnancy.

Mercury retrograde represents backtracking and sidestepping, and by referring to the rape kit as “another form of abortion,” she advocated for the very thing she is trying to make illegal 20 weeks later. In that case, perhaps she is also under a Neptunian delusion that women should be allowed abortions only at the times that she, herself, feels are appropriate. When Laubenberg was ridiculed for placing restrictions on her fellow women without even understanding the procedure, she retreated and had nothing else to say.

Mercury has dominion over all spoken and written word. It regulates our rational thought, mental clarity, and filters the material between our brains and our tongues (or not, as the case may be).  It controls whether we are deliberate thinkers or jump to conclusions, and whether we are hearing or speech impaired, have learning disabilities, ADHD, dyslexia, epilepsy, schizophrenia, stutter, or in the case of a certain myopic governor, just can’t see the forest for the trees.

In short (who am I kidding?), Mercury processes and disseminates information, and is the main tool for teachers, writers, journalists, librarians, orators, advertisers, salespeople (especially those who travel), couriers, coders, commentators, critics, filibusterers and many more. As if Mercury doesn't have enough to do, as the ruler of Virgo, it reigns over health care, too.

Of course, no planet actually stops in its orbit around the sun, nor does it reverse direction. But from our vantage point on earth, planets appear to do so, and it has a significant effect upon the matters that each planet represents. It’s quite common, with some planets seeming to move in backward motion roughly half the year (ever feel like you’ve taken one step forward and two steps back?), but Mercury is the quickest, and that may be why we notice its effects more than those of Neptune and Pluto, for instance.

The retrograde period begins a few days before the planet appears to stop its motion. Its backward trek lasts for about three weeks until it reaches its direct station. Then it appears to stop again before returning to direct motion and speeding away. It does this about every four months. The current cycle started when Mercury began to slow down, preparing to change direction, around June 15.

When Mercury is retrograde, there are all kinds of transportation and communication problems. Mail is misdirected, keys are lost, votes are recounted…Mercury was retrograde during the 2000 presidential election when Florida recounted the votes due to “hanging chad,” and “the winner,” George “Dubya” Bush, conveniently had a brother serving as the Governor of that state. Mercury was also retrograde during the 2012 Election that returned Barack Obama to office, but it challenged astrologers trying to predict the winner months before the event.

It’s also not a good idea to sign contracts, leases, wills, bills and other legal documents during a Mercury retrograde phase. It’s not even advisable to make important decisions. Something will go wrong. Did you read the small print, dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s? Is all the information there, and is it all correct? Was something slipped in at the last minute without your knowledge? Did an extra page appear in the contract? Does it really mean what you think it means? Are you sure? Absolutely sure?

Retrograde Mercury highlights the flaws in our arguments, and forces a restructuring of our thoughts, ideas and plans. It is at its most powerful during the retrograde cycle, and that is when unresolved issues come back to haunt us, demanding to be re-examined and dealt with again.

These periods tend to coincide with profound,
critical and fated events of historic or global importance.

The issues are thrust upon us, like it or not, and we have little control over the outcome, other than how we respond. We temporarily become more introspective and contemplative of the matters under the jurisdiction of the sign through which Mercury is traveling.

During the current retrograde cycle, Mercury is in Cancer, the sign of women, motherhood, fecundity, fertility, birth, lactation, family, domestic matters, “Home, Mom, Apple Pie,” patriotism, boats and the sea.

At the same moment that Senator Davis
was standing for women not only in Texas, but nationwide, and was holding the floor in those pink running shoes while the clock ticked toward midnight, the hour when the Senate's special session would end and the bill could no longer be voted upon, transiting Mercury was stationary retrograde, about to stop in its tracks.

Some of the symptoms of this period are misunderstandings and confusion; friends plan to meet for lunch, but one thought it was Thursday, the other thought Saturday, or the time or place are mixed up. Sometimes it obscures the facts, or we’re missing vital pieces of information. Or we are misdirected with a sleight-of-hand.

It interrupts communication, causing malfunction or loss of electronic equipment such as computers and telephones (
a beaver caused Internet access and cell phones to go down in a wide area of New Mexico last week). It is rarely advisable to set up networks or make changes to computers during Mercury’s retrograde period.

It is also infamous for coinciding with glitches and missed connections in transportation and accommodations. Whistleblower Edward Snowden was not on the plane to Cuba. Now he is stuck in limbo while various countries decide whether or not to grant asylum to him under pressure of trade agreements coming due. I’m betting Snowden didn’t know that Mercury's retrograde period tends to bring unforeseen changes and blockages.

On Tuesday, the Bolivian president's jet was rerouted because France and Portugal refused entry into their airspace, amid suspicions Snowden was on board. The plane landed in Vienna with no sign of the whistle blower. Maybe the Bolivian plane was the designated decoy. There is a certain irony in Snowden being charged with spying by people who are spying. That's convoluted Mercury logic.  And the re-routing of the plane clearly coincides with Mercury retrograde.

Mercury is a trickster, and in an attempt to block the filibuster, Republicans began trying to disqualify Senator Davis for mentioning Planned Parenthood and for adjusting her back brace.

(Texas will eventually have to change their filibuster rules to include the physically disabled because it discriminates. But one thing at a time…)

Finally, and literally in the 11th hour, Republican Sen. Donna Campbell claimed that sonograms weren’t germane to Bill 5 in an attempt to get the third strike against Senator Davis. But invasive vaginal sonograms are mandatory for all abortion patients. How is that not germane to the issue? That’s what 180,000 people watching online, and a Capitol building with hundreds of others wanted to know, and what Senator Kirk Watson (D-Texas) asked. At great length.  Calmly. And slowly.

Here’s what Donna Campbell doesn’t want you to know about vaginal sonograms.

Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst (R-TX) tried to rush a vote on whether or not the filibuster could continue, but Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-TX), who attended the session straight from her father’s funeral, and who has Mercury in outspoken Sagittarius, insisted on being recognized. The sheer nerve.

Dewhurst blew her off when she requested he walk her through his procedural rulings.

“Did the President hear me, or did the President hear me and refuse to recognize me?" she asked.

Still not called on, she persisted.

"At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over her male colleagues?” and the crowd roared.

Rules were called into question. A vote was required to end the filibuster, but the voting couldn’t be heard over the raucous marathon of cheering and chanting in the gallery. Democrats had the ball and were skillfully milking the clock while Republicans tried to speed up the game. It was really very good drama, playing out not just to the last minute, but beyond. Midnight came and went and Republicans indicated that a vote had been taken and passed, while Democrats declared that the vote had taken place after midnight and died. Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst and his minion left the Senate floor. Confusion reigned and various media reported differing winners.

Three hours later, Dewhurst conceded that the bill was dead.

Mercury was in the last hours of its stationary motion. It paused in its tracks at 8:02 A.M. CDT, at 23 degrees Cancer on June 26, just hours after the filibuster ended.

Mark Jones, a political science professor at Rice University, said, “Republican Senate leaders realized they were on very shaky legal ground,” when they declared victory on Senate Bill 5 a couple minutes after midnight—going so far as to change the time stamp on the Legislature’s official web page.”

True to a retrograde cycle, Governor Perry will try to force the bill through as part of three bills in a second special session to be debated again. And in true Mercury trickster style, he’s being sneaky about the time and place that it will be done.

In fact, while I have been working on this post, three states have passed strict new abortion laws by sneaking them into other bills without public debate.

* Texas House committee approves abortion rules
* North Carolina latest state to seek tighter abortion clinic rules
* Ohio Democrat: GOP’s new abortion laws would never have survived public debate

There are two more phases to this cycle before it ends.

Mercury will officially pause, end its backward journey, and begin direct motion again at 13 degrees Cancer. The direct station is the most powerful, and should be utilized for maximum benefit. July 20 should coincide with a turning point.

Finally, on August 4, Mercury will once again reach 23 degrees Cancer, where it began the cycle. The chips have fallen.

Unless it all gets rehashed in the next cycle in October, in the sign of Scorpio, because a retrograde Mercury cycle is also a time when matters begun under a previous retrograde cycle will finally arrive at an end.

Remember early on when I wrote that “Our ability to say what we mean and to mean what we say is less acute during the retrograde period, as well as our ability to discriminate. Our critical faculties are dimmed as well–in most cases. There are exceptions to the rule…?”

An exception that comes to mind are people born while Mercury was retrograde. Of course, Mercury is unique for every individual, and must be read in context with the rest of the chart, but Wendy Davis has a very interesting natal Mercury Retrograde.

When I don’t have a birth time, I usually use a sunrise chart, or maybe a noon chart if someone has burst into sudden infamy or renown. If the moon changed signs on the date of birth, I then cast charts from midnight to midnight to see the exact range of the moon that day, and that’s what I did with Senator Davis's chart.

The moon moved from Aquarius to Pisces on her date of birth. Most people with the moon in Aquarius (Princess Diana, Pope Francis, Ashley Judd) are intellectual, progressive, and politically-minded types.

Most people with the moon in Pisces are romantic, creative types (Leonardo daVinci, Michael Jackson, Percy Bysshe Shelley).

So I wanted to see a chart with the moon in Aquarius.

When I cast the chart for the latest time of day that the moon was in that sign, it gave me a birth time of 5:30 PM. And there are some interesting things about this speculative chart.

For one thing, look at the degree of the midheaven 22 Cancer, (women, family, motherhood), just one degree from the current Mercury’s retrograde station. And conjunct the midheaven are the moon’s north node (a beneficent, and particularly fortunate in that position) and the Part of Fortune (also a beneficent)
at the highest point of career, reputation, honor and path in life. It’s impressive.

Another interesting point about this chart is that the moon’s nodes changed from direct motion to their normal retrograde motion at 10:26 A.M. the morning of her birth. Planets gain strength during their direct stations, and it appears the same may be true for the moon’s nodes. The North Node is a benefic of the quality of Venus or Jupiter.

One more quick one before I go on to show you something else. Neptune, ruler of the 6th house of health is rising in Scorpio
(sex, death, rape, abortion, surgery, the welfare of the people, Persephone). It’s also the dispositor of Chiron, the asteroid associated with health issues and teaching. Neptune trines Chiron with a separation of only 26 minutes. Chiron is in compassionate Pisces in the 5th house of children as well as the house of romance and sex without commitment. Aquarius is the sign on the 5th house showing progressive and intellectual attitudes about them.

It would be interesting to see where her asteroid goddesses are, but asteroids aren’t my forte, and it’s a lot of work to do without an accurate birth time, so I’m going to pass for now.

MIDNIGHT AT THE FILIBUSTER

As said earlier, if Senator Davis’s birth time is close to 5:30 PM, then the stationary retrograde Mercury (communication as ruler of Gemini / health as ruler of Virgo) would have made its station within a degree or two of her natal midheaven (honor, career, reputation), north node (a benefic, forward movement) and Part of Fortune (luck)

Transiting Venus (feminine principle) in Cancer (women, motherhood, family planning) would occupy the 10th house (honor, career, reputation)
.

Transiting Mars (assertiveness, effort) in Gemini (communication) on the cusp between the 8th house (sex, death, rape, abortion, surgery, the welfare of the people, Persephone) and the 9th house (philosophy, medicine, religion, law) would trine her natal ascendant (physical body, personality, in this time and place) in the sign of Libra (balance, justice, diplomacy)
.

The transiting moon (women, motherhood, mood) in Aquarius (intellectual, progressive, revolutionary) would square Senator Davis’s natal Neptune (the mood and inspiration of the times) in Scorpio (sex, death, rape, abortion, surgery, the welfare of the people, Persephone), which is conjoined by the transiting north node (shines a favorable light). The square represents the stress of the event, and sets off the Neptune trine to natal Chiron (health issues, teaching, wounding, protecting)
, which has been progressing toward a return to its natal place for several months.

That’s all I’m prepared to speculate about without an accurate birth time.

SENATOR DAVIS AND THE SIBLY CHART

There’s another chart we can look at even without Senator Davis’s exact birth time.

Born July 4th, 1776, The United States has the sun in Cancer, (Home, Mom, apple pie; Mother, God, country), and the moon in Aquarius (freedom, liberty, equality).

When comparing Senator Davis’s chart to the Sibly chart, we can’t use her ascendant, midheaven or Part of Fortune because they move so fast, but she could have been born up to about five hours before the speculative 5:30 time, and her natal moon would still be conjunct the natal moon of the United States of America in Aquarius (freedom, liberty, equality). There is a strong lunar connection (intuition, influence, emotional rapport)
between Senator Davis and women in the U.S.

Progressive, intellectual, unconventional approaches to motherhood and families are shared through the Aquarius moon. The moon is the ruler of the U.S. 8th house (sex, death, rape, abortion, surgery, welfare, public opinion and values, Persephone abduction) where the senator’s natal north node conjuncts get this – the United States natal retrograde Mercury in Cancer, just 1 degree 06 minutes ahead of the current retrograde Mercury station. Transiting Mercury will have to go through its entire retrograde cycle and return to its stationary degree before it will complete the conjunction to the natal U.S. Mercury on August 4. That will likely be a critical date in the abortion debate.

A couple of days prior to that conjunction, direct Mercury will conjunct Senator Davis’s natal north node and possibly her midheaven and Part of Fortune, putting her in the spotlight once again.
