Subject A Lottery Solar Return

The Solar Return of Subject A took place at 7:53:19 A.M. Eastern Standard Time at her place of residence, Methuen, MA. In the return, the Sun occupied the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks. It squared Uranus, planet of shocks, surprises and sudden changes of fortune, in the 8th house of lotteries (and taxes, of course).

The Ascendant / Descendant axis squared the Prenatal Solar Eclipse at 27 Pisces 28, in the 10th house.

Gemini was on the Return Ascendant, and its ruler, Mercury, was in mutual reception with Venus, ruler of the 12th house of intuition and other realms, and the 5th house of risks and gambles. Both occupied the 12th house. Mercury trined Neptune, ruler of the Pisces Midheaven (another 12th house theme), in the 8th house of lotteries.  Mercury also squared Transpluto of payoffs.

The Moon, ruler of the 2nd house of money and resources, was the rising planet.

Jupiter conjuncted the 8th house cusp, and squared the Moon’s Nodes, marking the means to the milestone or turning point in life. The North Node occupied the 5th house of risks and gambles in Venus-ruled Libra. The South Node occupied the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks.
  • The Nodes sextiled / trined Venus, ruler of the 5th house.
  • Jupiter, planet of good fortune, and the Vertex date with destiny, sextiled each other and made inconjuncts to Venus, putting it at the apex of a yod (finger of fate or hand of God).
  • Venus, ruler of the 5th, and the South Node of the Moon, also formed a yod with the Vertex at the apex. The Vertex was just inside the 5th house, in Scorpio, a money sign.
  • Chiron, of triumphant ascendancy and rewards, conjuncted the 5th house cusp and squared the Moon, ruler of the 2nd house of money. It also conjuncted the Prenatal Lunar Eclipse at 12 Libra 32, just inside the 5th house.

Saturn, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries, occupied the 10th house of public recognition, where it made a trine to Pluto, planet of wealth and transformation both in and ruling the 6th house of work, service, duty and obligation. It surely transformed her daily grind, providing extended menu choices, eating habits, change of routine, probably wardrobe updates, possibly new furniture, maybe the adoption of new pet, and having someone else do the cleaning and oil changing.

Pluto squared the Return Midheaven / Nadir axis to transform the winner’s path in life, and how the public would interact with her from that point forward. It would also transform her family and domestic life. They may have moved to a bigger house, or maybe she quit work, thereby altering the domestic routine.

Mars, ruler of the 11th house of plot twists, occupied the 11th house, where it squared Neptune, ruler of the Pisces Midheaven, in the 8th house of lotteries. Pisces on the Midheaven suggests a year of uncertainty about the career or life path, or maybe she spent the first half of the year fantasizing about winning the lottery. After Pisces satisfied the fantasy, in all probability, it would add glamour or mystery to her reputation. Either way, Pisces and Neptune were almost certainly instrumental in the hunch or impulse to buy a ticket for that drawing.

Mars separated from a square to Jupiter, which was activating the 8th house cusp. Mars and Jupiter in square have a spontaneous or reckless quality that might influence us to take a stab at leaping tall buildings in a single bound, for instance. Renowned master of astrology, Robert Hand (Planets in Transit: Life Cycles for Living; 1976; Whitford Press) wrote that, “You may act for the future under its influence.” We can easily imagine Subject A at the counter of a convenience store a few days before, following a hunch and thinking, “Why not take a chance? Winning would certainly improve my future.” Mars was also just separating from a square to the natal Moon, another impulsive combination that may describe domestic drama, or change of residence. Finally, Mars trined Transpluto of payoffs.

In the comparison of the Solar Return to the natal chart of Subject A, remember that the angles and house cusps on the outer wheel are those of the Solar Return. The natal planets and angles are in the inner wheel, where you normally expect to find them.

We immediately see the Return Ascendant is about to conjunct the natal Uranus, planet of shocks and surprises, ruler of the natal 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks. Return Uranus in the 8th house of lotteries squared the Sun in the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks and opposed natal Transpluto of payoffs in the Return 2nd house of money.

Below, the Solar Return Moon, ruler of the Return 2nd house of money, squared the natal Moon’s Nodes, indicators of milestones or turning points in life, in the Return 5th and 11th houses of risks, gambles, plot twists and lucky breaks.
  • It also sextiled natal Saturn, ruler of the natal Midheaven and the Return 8th house of lotteries.
  • Additionally, it squared the natal Vertex date with destiny in Scorpio, just inside the cusp of the 5th house of risks and gambles.

Mercury, the Solar Return chart ruler, returned to its natal position at the cusp of the natal 2
nd house of money simultaneously with the Solar Return.

If you need refreshing on the natal:

Another immediate eye-catcher is that the Return Midheaven conjuncted natal Jupiter, while the Return Jupiter conjuncted the natal Midheaven. The Return Nodes squared the conjunction of the Return Jupiter and natal Midheaven, creating a milestone or turning point where good fortune shone a bright light on her life path and became part of her public identity.

We might equate Jupiter’s conjunction to the Midheaven as big, jovial Jupiter, the Great Beneficent, hovering in a lotus position right over the highest point in the chart, showering her with a vast fortune of gold coins, and bestowing the kind of joy and radiance conveyed by a bride on her wedding day. Subject A’s reputation, the public image she projected, and her path going forward (represented by the natal Midheaven) came to public attention (return 7
th house / cusp of the 8th) in a favorable and fortunate way (Jupiter). In addition to the auspicious Return Jupiter conjunction to the natal Midheaven, it also:
  • Sextiled natal Venus, ruler of the natal 2nd house of money, and 7th house of the public at large.
  • Squared the natal East Point in the return 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks.
  • Squared natal Neptune in the return 5th house of risks and gambles.
  • The Return Midheaven / natal Jupiter conjunction received an opposition from the Return Part of Fortune. See it down at the Nadir, below?

Solar Return Saturn, ruler of the Return 8th house of lotteries, squared natal Uranus, the closest planet to the Ascendant in the Return chart. When Saturn squares the Ascendant / Descendant axis in our charts there is usually trouble in paradise, often bringing separations and breakups of our closest relationships. This aspect means that our freedom and independence are severely challenged or limited, and with Uranus at her Ascendant for the year, Subject A may have felt in exceptional need of personal freedom. We might expect to see this aspect in cases of incarceration or at a time when someone becomes disabled. It brings feelings of utter helplessness and of being at the mercy of others. It is similar to a fixed Grand Cross, where we are faced with unyielding obstacles, never-ending delays, and repeated setbacks. In our attempts to break through or break out, we are likely to behave impetuously. Uranus ruled the 9th house in the return chart. Whether or not Subject A struggled with these issues, we don’t know because we aren’t privy to personal details of her life. This aspect becomes even more interesting in the progressed solar return chart, which we’ll study soon.

Solar Return Neptune, ruler of the Return Midheaven, occupied the Return 8th house of lotteries. It squared the natal Ascendant in the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks, indicating a personally significant year, maybe one a little “unbelievable” or “like a dream come true.” The Return North Node conjuncted natal Neptune in the Return 5th house of risks and gambles.

The Return Pluto at 02 Sag, squared the conjunction of the Return Midheaven with natal Jupiter, marking a year of transformation affecting both the path in life (Midheaven) and home, family and domestic matters (Nadir). I don't recall who wrote it, but s/he said, "Pluto closes the book on our past, and begins writing the next chapter of our lives."

Return Chiron, of triumphant ascendancy and rewards, conjuncted the natal South Node of reaping karma at the cusp of the Return 5th house.

The Return Part of Fortune (02 Vir) trined the Solar Return in the 11th house of plot twists and changes of fortune. The Sun ruled the natal 5th house.

The Return Vertex (17 Sco) trined natal Venus, ruler of the natal 2nd house of money. Venus ruled the Return 5th house.

The Return Transpluto (23 Leo) squared both natal and Return Mercury at 23 Tau. Mercury was the Return chart ruler in mutual reception with Venus, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles, remember?

Below, the Progressed Solar Return:

When we progress the Solar Return to the winning date, a full six months after Subject A’s birthday, we get a chart that was turned 180 degrees from the original Solar Return. Instead of 27 Gemini 46, the Ascendant had progressed to 29 Sagittarius 27; both squared the Prenatal Solar Eclipse at 27 Pisces 28.

Jupiter in Capricorn ruled the Progressed Return chart, was the rising planet, and reinforced the aspect of Saturn squaring the Ascendant / Descendant axis. As it had six months previously, Jupiter continued to square the Moon’s Nodes, still indicating a milestone or turning point in life.

There isn’t much difference between the Progressed Solar Return and the original Solar Return. Only the fastest bodies gained any ground; the biggest difference was that everything moved around the wheel to new house positions. However, as the chart progressed, it intercepted some houses and the planets occupying them. Interceptions are like flashing neon arrows pointing to areas of life that demand extra attention. In the Progressed Return, the 1st and 7th houses became intercepted. Akin to Saturn square the Ascendant / Descendant axis, it could be another indication of relationship issues to be worked out. It could also be read as issues between the "me" of the 1st house and the "not me" general public of the 7th.

In the Progressed Solar Return, Jupiter and the Moon, along with Uranus (ruler of the 2nd house of money) and Neptune, were intercepted. These planets were contained and confined with little ability to initiate action because they had no outlet at the house cusps. They were building a head of steam, however, and when the Ascendant / Descendant axis reached the critical 29th “Do something!” degree, the event took place.
  • The 1st and 12th houses were tied together because Jupiter ruled both.
Sagittarius was on the cusp of the Return Ascendant, and the 12th house of other realms and intuition, tying those two houses together. Wouldn’t we love to ask the winner if she felt any gut instinct or intuitive inklings to buy a ticket?

  • The 6th and 7th houses were tied together because Mercury ruled both.
Gemini was on the cusp of both the 7th house of significant others, and the 6th house of service, duty and obligation, tying together those areas of life. Mercury occupied the 5th house of risks and gambles.

Remember, it’s the same Mercury that returned to its own natal position simultaneously with the Solar Return. If you cast Mercury’s Return Chart, you’ll find it as the rising planet, the ruler of the 2nd house of money, and the ruler of the intercepted 5th house of risks and gambles. Still in mutual reception with Venus, Taurus was on the Mercury Return Ascendant and Venus occupied the 2nd house of money.

  • Due to the interceptions, there were mutable signs on the Ascendant / Descendant axis, and cardinal signs on the Midheaven / Nadir axis, which suggests pressure from others to make emotional life decisions.

The Return Sun, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries, squared Return Uranus, ruler of the 2nd house of money, which activated the 2nd house from the cusp.

In the Progressed Solar Return, the Moon had moved six degrees in six months. Jupiter, the chart ruler and rising planet, formed a Grand Cross with the Moon and the Moon’s Nodes, marking a milestone or turning point in life, which echoed the Grand Cross formed between Return Jupiter, the Return Moon’s Nodes and the natal Moon. The Return Moon squared the Prenatal Lunar Eclipse at 12 Libra 32.

The Return Moon in Cancer, with “family” written all over it, was intercepted in the 7th house of intimate relationships, business partnerships, and the public at large. The 7th is also a house of legal matters. The Sun, which gained 30 minutes in distance since the birthday, appeared in the Return 4th house, putting even greater emphasis on family, home, domestic matters and real estate.

The Moon in opposition to Jupiter tends to be self-indulgent and spoiled. In a natal chart, the person would likely be pampered and lack motivation, but this is exactly the kind of influence we should expect to see in a winning lottery chart. It’s also an aspect of extravagance and generosity, and Subject A may have intended to share the wealth with family members, as indicated by the Moon. In its own sign of Cancer, and intercepted in the 7th house, the Moon points to her closest relationships as the area where emotional and personal needs were centered, and where she’d have to make emotional decisions involving family and domestic matters.

But in a stressful aspect—Grand Crosses create obstacles that must be overcome—expansive feelings of generosity may also have resulted in emotional stress if her family overwhelmed her with advice about how to handle her windfall, and what her duties and responsibilities might be, or if they had a sense of entitlement. Having to handle a lot of legal matters at once is also exhausting.

Return Mars conjuncted the Nadir / opposed the Midheaven. It ruled the Nadir and co-ruled the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks. Mars conjunct to the Nadir often heralds a domestic move, especially with so much lunar activity in the chart. In fact, Mars was just separating from a square to the natal Moon that occupied and ruled the natal 4th house. If anyone studying here would not buy a new house when you win the lottery, raise your hand.

Return Saturn co-ruled the Ascendant where Capricorn was intercepted, and it continued to square the Ascendant / Descendant axis. Saturn is the ruler of things that are cold, and this aspect is a deep freeze. The subject withdraws, and walls go up. Separations occur and we feel cut off from others, alone in the world. It may not have been the happiest lottery winning experience, and there’s more about this in the Progressed chart comparison to the natal chart coming up in a bit.

The East Point moved from 05 Gemini to 21 Capricorn, gone from hiding in the 12th house to going public in the 1st, riding the coattails of Jupiter and rising just ahead of Neptune, planet of fantasies and dreams come true in Capricorn. Neptune ruled the 3rd house of the rational mind in the Progressed Return, maybe prompting the question, “Is this real?” All of these planets and points were released the morning after the win, when the progressed Ascendant moved to 00 Capricorn (an Aries Point). There were a few more changes that contributed to the win, however.

Return Venus at 17 Gem, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles, trined the North Node and Part of Fortune in Libra at the top of the chart. The Part of Fortune had moved from 02 Virgo to 19 Libra since her birthday, from opposing the Midheaven to almost conjuncting it. It was in the sweet spot just before the Midheaven. It squared lucky Jupiter, the chart ruler, and the East Point, which captured public attention.

The Vertex date with destiny in Scorpio (17 Sco) in the original Solar Return was at the apex of a yod with Venus and the South Node in that chart. It was just about to leave the 5th house when we last saw it. Now no longer part of the yod, the Vertex made it all the way to 10 Leo in the Progressed Return, where it activated the cusp of the 8th house of lotteries, and made a sextile to the Prenatal Lunar Eclipse at 12 Libra 32, as well as its own natal position, also at 12 Libra 32. This is the woman whose natal Vertex was in exact conjunction to her Prenatal Lunar Eclipse at 12 Lib 32.

Remember that the angles and house cusps on the outer wheel are those of the solar return. The natal planets and angles have been placed in the inner wheel.

Comparing the Progressed Solar Return to the natal chart of Subject A, we find the natal Midheaven "rising," just ahead of Return Jupiter in the “rising planets that aren’t” position. Because transits are read in a counter-clockwise direction, not clockwise, Jupiter isn't rising; it's descending - but the Ascendant is moving toward Jupiter.

Remember jovial Jupiter hovering in a lotus position showering the winner with gold and jubilance? Subject A’s reputation, the public image she projected, and her path going forward had come to public attention in yet another way. Return Jupiter (17 Cap) squared the natal East Point (18 Ari), which also attracted public interest or captured its imagination.

In most cases we won’t find many aspects here that we haven’t already covered. Although neither natal Neptune nor the Progressed Return Moon ruled or occupied a winning house, the T-square formed by the Progressed Return Moon (14 Can) with the natal Neptune (15 Lib) and natal Midheaven 15 Cap) is important because natal Neptune received a conjunction from a previous Lunar Eclipse (14 Lib) in April 1996, which sensitized all the planets and points in aspect with Neptune. More about this later.

Venus ruled the natal 2nd house of money and 7th house of marriage and partnerships, as well as the Progressed Solar Return Midheaven and 5th house of risks and gambles, and squared its own natal position.

Before we sweep the children off the streets, let’s take another look at that important Solar Return Saturn (01 Ari) square to natal Uranus (1 Can).  Below,  in the original (unprogressed) Solar Return chart compared to the natal, we found that natal Uranus, planet of shocks, surprises and sudden changes, as well as freedom and independence, rose at the Ascendant.

Squared by Saturn, we conjectured that something had to give in order for her to gain autonomy. Perhaps she purchased the ticket with the hope that winning would buy her freedom. By the time she won the lottery and the chart had progressed approximately 180 degrees, natal Uranus reached a conjunction with the Return Descendant. Ouch. However, before we assume too much, it’s interesting how many hard aspects there were in the charts of all the winners. This is by no means an exhaustive list, only a cursory glance.

000-------------------------------------------000

In Subject A’s winning charts:
  • Transiting Saturn squared natal Uranus.
  • Directed Uranus conjuncted natal Pluto.

In the chart of Subject B, transiting Saturn opposed natal Uranus in exact partile.
  • Solar Return Saturn opposed natal Uranus.

Tertiary Uranus squared natal Saturn in the chart of Subject C.

Directed Saturn squared natal Uranus for Subject D.

In the charts of Subject E, whose Saturn ruled the natal 2nd house and Moon ruled the 8th:
  • Progressed Saturn squared natal Uranus.
  • Transiting Uranus squared progressed Saturn.
  • Tertiary Saturn squared natal Sun.
  • Tertiary Moon squared natal Saturn.
  • Harmonic Saturn squared harmonic Uranus.

Directed Saturn conjuncted natal Pluto for Subject F, whose Moon ruled the natal 2nd house and Saturn ruled the natal 8th.
  • Tertiary Saturn squared the natal Sun.
  • Tertiary Pluto squared Mercury, the natal chart ruler.
  • Harmonic Saturn squared harmonic Neptune.
  • Harmonic Saturn opposed natal Pluto.

And for Subject G, Tertiary Uranus squared natal Pluto. Harmonic Pluto conjuncted natal Saturn.
 000 ----------------------------000

Whatever else happened in the lives of the winners, we’re only considering which houses the planets ruled and occupied. Natal Uranus ruled the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks in Subject A’s natal, and the 2nd house of money in the Progressed Solar Return. Saturn co-ruled the Progressed Return chart because Capricorn was intercepted in the 1st house, and that helped to create the win.

Return Chiron, of triumphant ascendancy and rewards, conjuncted the natal South Node of reaping karma.

The Return South Node conjuncted the natal East Point, representing personal matters that play out in public or attract public attention.

The Return East Point opposed the natal Moon in the 7th house of close relationships and the public at large, and trined natal Mars, the natal chart ruler, as well as co-ruler of the natal 8th house of lotteries.

The Return Vertex opposed the natal Part of Fortune, which occupied the 10th house of public attention, and the Return 2nd house of money.

The Return Part of Fortune squared the natal Moon, which ruled and occupied the 4th house of home, family and domestic matters, and the return 7th house of close relationships and the public at large.

In April 1996, near the time of her Solar Return, there were two eclipses, a Lunar Eclipse on April 4, and a Solar Eclipse on April 17. Subject A’s birthday wasn’t until April 24, and she didn’t win until October, but we can see these two eclipses trigger all three of her charts.

The first, a Lunar Eclipse at 14 Libra 31

IN THE NATAL

  • Conjuncted her Prenatal Lunar Eclipse at 12 Libra 32, which was also exactly conjunct her natal Vertex date with destiny, both just inside the return 5th cusp.
  • Conjuncted Neptune and triggered the yod with Pluto and Venus.
  • Sextiled Pluto, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries.
  • Squared the Midheaven.

IN THE SOLAR RETURN

  • Occurred just inside the 5th house cusp, conjunct the Moon’s North Node.
  • Squared Jupiter, which activated the cusp of the 8th house of lotteries.
  • Trined Venus, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles.

IN THE PROGRESSED SOLAR RETURN

  • Conjuncted the North Node.
  • Squared Jupiter, the chart ruler
  • Trined Venus, ruler of the Midheaven and the 5th house of risks and gambles.
  • Squared the Moon, in and ruling the 7th house.

A Solar Eclipse at 28 Aries 12 occurred one week before her birthday / Solar Return:

IN THE NATAL

  • Conjuncted the Ascendant.

IN THE SOLAR RETURN

  • Sextiled the Ascendant.
  • Squared Neptune in the 8th house of lotteries, ruler of the Midheaven.
  • Widely conjuncted Mars, in and ruling the return 11th house of plot twists.
  • Widely trined Transpluto of payoffs.

IN THE PROGRESSED SOLAR RETURN

  • Conjuncted the Nadir. The closer a planet is to an angle, the more effective it is.
  • Widely conjuncted the Sun (5o 56’), ruler of the 8th house of lotteries.
  • Squared Neptune in the 1st house of identity.

On September 27, 1996, a month before she won, a lunar eclipse took place at 04 Aries 17:

IN THE NATAL

  • Conjuncted the North Node.
  • Squared Uranus, ruler of the 11th house of plot twists.
  • Trined Transpluto of payoffs.

IN THE SOLAR RETURN

  • Conjuncted Saturn, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries, in the 10th house of public acknowledgment.
  • Squared the Moon, ruler of the 2nd house of money in the 1st house of self-identity.
  • Opposed Chiron, of triumphant ascendancy and rare achievements, at the cusp of the 5th house of risks and gambles.
  • Trined Pluto.
  • Sextiled Uranus in the 8th house of lotteries.

IN THE PROGRESSED RETURN CHART

  • Conjuncted Saturn, co-ruler of the chart (Capricorn intercepted).
  • Opposed Chiron, of triumphant ascendancy and rare opportunities.
  • Trined Pluto, ruler of the 11th house of plot twists, in the 11th house.
  • Sextiled Uranus, ruler of the 2nd house of money in the 1st house, at the cusp of the 2nd house.

On October 12, 1996, two weeks before Subject A won the lottery, a Solar Eclipse occurred at 19 Libra 32:

IN THE NATAL

  • Conjuncted Neptune in the 6th house.
  • Sextiled Chiron, of triumphant ascendancy and rare opportunities, in the 9thhouse. Chiron was retrograde, and two minutes from re-entering the 8th house.
  • Opposed the East Point.
  • Squared the Moon, ruler of the 4th, in the 4th.

IN THE SOLAR RETURN

  • Conjuncted the North Node in the 5th house of risks and gambles.
  • Squared Jupiter, in and ruling the 7th house.
  • Opposed Mars, ruler of the 11th house of risks and gambles, in the 11th house.
  • Trined Venus, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles.

IN THE PROGRESSED RETURN CHART

  • Conjuncted the North Node and Part of Fortune at the Midheaven.
  • Squared the East Point.
  • Trined Venus, ruler of the Midheaven and 5th house of risks and gambles.
  • Squared the Moon, ruler of the intercepted 7th house, in the 7th.

On October 26, 1996, Subject A won $35 million dollars. At 10:11 A. M. EST, a Full Moon took place at 03 Taurus 26. Even the lunation chart was a winner.

IN THE NATAL

  • Conjuncted the Ascendant.
  • Conjuncted the natal Sun, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles, with an orb of only 12 minutes.

IN THE SOLAR RETURN

  • Conjuncted the Sun in the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks.

IN THE PROGRESSED RETURN CHART

  • Conjuncted the Sun, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries.
