Subject D Secondary Progressions

In Subject D’s secondary progressed chart, a new sign culminated on the Midheaven, indicating that a new phase of life had begun. Venus, which conjuncted the Midheaven, was the final dispositor of the progressed chart, and the ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles. Notice as we go along that Venus doesn’t always contribute to winning unless it occupies or rules a winning house, or is in a place of prominence, such as being the final dispositor or conjunct an angle. However, it still sweetens the pot if it’s involved at all. A renowned and highly respected astrologer has Jupiter (too much) conjunct Venus (sugar) on his Ascendant and struggles with diabetes. And yes, he is an exceptionally kind and caring person. Usually, when transiting Venus conjuncts the Midheaven, we lie back and take it easy. Easy Street. That’s an apt description; just kicked back, on vacation, maybe. Self-indulgent, lazy and hedonistic. We can see how this was likely to be the case for someone who just won $13 million dollars.

The ruler of the Capricorn Ascendant, Saturn, was in the 8th house of lotteries and trine the Part of Fortune. It squared the Moon’s Nodes on the cusps of the 5th (risks and gambles) and 11th houses (plot twists and lucky breaks). Saturn was also the co-ruler of the 2nd house of money.

The primary co-ruler of the 2nd house, Uranus, trined Venus, ruler of the 5th, at the Midheaven. Additionally, it made an inconjunct to Jupiter in the 11th. Don’t overlook inconjunct aspects, and remember that they call for adjustments. Uranus brings sudden changes. In this case, Jupiter ruled the 3rd house of the immediate environment and everyday life, and the 12th house of privacy, the areas of her life where she would have to make sudden adjustments.

We’ve already noted that Venus ruled the 5th house of risks and gambles and that the North Node was on the cusp there, so let’s move on to the 8th house of lotteries, which the Sun ruled. The Sun received a sextile from the Part of Fortune.

The 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks had co-rulers because Scorpio was on the cusp. Mars conjuncted Transpluto of payoffs, progressed Pluto conjuncted the Vertex date with destiny, and they all hovered at the cusp of the 8th house of lotteries. They received a square from Mercury in the 10th house of public notice, which conjuncted Chiron of triumphant ascendancy and rewards. Those of us who would like to win should be reminded how stressful winning can be when long-lost relatives, long-forgotten acquaintances, charitable organizations, the media, and the IRS start knocking on our door, ringing our phone, stuffing our mailboxes, and spamming our in-boxes. We may never again know who our real friends are.

As previously mentioned, Jupiter (bigger, better, more) occupied the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks. Note that it’s conjunct the South Node. The Nodes have a karmic reaping and sowing effect in our lives, and it’s the South Node that does the reaping, for good or ill.

The secondary progressed chart around the natal is below:

Comparing the secondary progressions to the natal chart of Subject D, the thing that catches our eye is the play between Jupiter and the South Node at the Ascendant. Conjunct in the natal chart, Jupiter slowly progressed toward the Ascendant and closer to the natal South Node, while the South Node progressed in the normal retrograde motion they almost always maintain, closer to natal Jupiter. The progressed Moon’s Nodes, both north and south, sextiled and trined the natal Midheaven / Nadir axis. Progressed Jupiter also opposed the prenatal solar eclipse at 28 Taurus 42.

Moving down into the 1st house, we find the progressed Part of Fortune conjunct the natal East Point. Remember that the East Point is a secondary Ascendant. It’s where the natal Ascendant would be if we had been born at the equator. It works like a combination of the Ascendant and Midheaven, indicating interaction with others while in public, or personal matters which take place in public or which capture public attention.

Progressed Saturn, ruler of the natal 2nd house of money and resources, squared natal Jupiter, the chart ruler, and trined the East Point.

The 5th house of risks and gambles had Aries on the cusp. Progressed Mars, as we saw in the previous chart, conjuncted progressed Transpluto of payoffs. Both were conjunct the natal Transpluto, but only Mars mattered because Transpluto is an outer “planet” that will never move more than a couple of degrees from its natal place by progression. Both squared natal Chiron, of triumphant ascendancy and once-in-a-lifetime events.

The progressed Moon, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries, occupied the 10th house of public attention and sextiled / trined the natal Ascendant / Descendant axis. It was two minutes from an exact sextile with the natal Part of Fortune in the 8th house.

Progressed Venus, ruler of the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks, occupied the 11th house in the 29th degree, one that wants to do something. However, it really doesn’t. Other than an out-of-sign square to the Part of Fortune in the 8th house of lotteries, and an inconjunct to the Prenatal Solar Eclipse at 28 Taurus 42, it was no help at all. When we expect a planet “to do something” in a particular chart but can’t find what we anticipate, we should be patient. Wait to see if it receives significant aspects from transits.

Progressed Mercury, ruler of two angles—the Descendant and Midheaven—presented one of those times when we check the houses it occupies and ruled and think so what? It ruled the Midheaven, and that’s something. It also ruled the 7th house of partnerships, but that’s a slightly lesser something in lottery astrology, unless the ticket was owned jointly with another person. However, don’t forget that Mercury was the final dispositor of the natal chart, and progressed Mercury made a number of aspects to natal planets, more than any other progressed planet, which made it a planet in high focus.

  • It trined natal Mars in the 8th house of lotteries, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles.
  • Trined the natal Vertex in the 8th house of lotteries.
  • Squared natal Pluto, planet of transformative wealth in the 8th house of lotteries.
  • Squared natal Saturn, ruler of the 2nd house of money and resources.
  • Sextiled the natal Sun.
  • Sextiled natal Venus, ruler of the 11th house of plot twists.
  • Opposed the natal Moon, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries. We’ve seen other aspects separating with a wide orb that still worked, such as the conjunction of progressed Mars and Transpluto at three degrees past the trine to the Ascendant. Sometimes we might want to check the speed of a planet against its normal speed, or just glance in the ephemeris to see if it is about to station.

Whether or not progressed Mercury still opposed the natal Moon, progressed Chiron certainly did. Also, the progressed Ascendant sextiled natal Chiron of triumphant ascendancy and rewards, in the 11th house of lucky breaks.

The progressed Vertex date with destiny conjuncted natal Pluto in the 8th house of lotteries, along with Saturn, ruler of the 2nd house of money.

Finally, the progressed East Point, indicator of public interaction or public attention, occupied the 2nd house of money, where it sextiled and trined the Moon’s Nodes, indicators of milestones or turning points in life.

Below is the transit chart with the secondary progressions.

What first catches the eye in the transits to Subject D’s progressed chart? We could go with:
  • Transiting Pluto, planet of total transformation, enormous odds, and plutocracy conjunct the Midheaven, her path in life and place of public acknowledgment. It squared progressed Mars, the co-ruler of the Midheaven, and Transpluto of payoffs. It also sextiled the progressed Ascendant.
  • Or we might be drawn to the transiting Sun, Moon and Neptune conjunct the Ascendant.
      • The Sun ruled the 8th house of lotteries and squared the natal Moon.
      • The transiting Moon ruled the Descendant and squared progressed Neptune.
      • Neptune neither occupied nor ruled a winning house, but it was an unaspected planet in the natal chart. Occupying the 12th house of other realms, and ruling the 3rd house of communication, Subject D may have had an intuitive hunch to buy a ticket, or may very well have asked, “Is this real, or am I dreaming?”

Moving further into the 1st house, we find transiting Jupiter (bigger, better, more) squaring the progressed Sun, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries.

Behind Jupiter, the transiting Vertex date with destiny conjuncted the East Point, a point that captures the public’s imagination. They squared the Moon’s Nodes in the progressed 5th house of risks and gambles and the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks.

Transiting Venus, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles, had just entered the 2nd house of money where it trined the progressed Sun, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries; sextiled the progressed Part of Fortune; opposed Pluto, ruler of the Midheaven as well as the 11th house of lucky breaks; and opposed the progressed Vertex date with destiny.

Two degrees past the exact aspect, Mars trined progressed Uranus, ruler of the 2nd house of money and resources, and trined Venus at the Midheaven, the final dispositor of the progressed chart, and ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles. It also made an out-of-sign trine to the progressed Midheaven.

We see nothing else until we reach the 5th house of risks and gambles where the transiting Midheaven conjuncted the progressed North Node just inside the cusp. Note that they were in Taurus, a money sign. The transiting North Node, close by, conjuncted the Prenatal Solar Eclipse at 28 Taurus 42, and opposed the progressed Jupiter in the 11th house of lucky breaks—which means the South Node conjuncted Jupiter.

While we’re visiting the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks, let’s talk about one of the most dreaded and worrisome transits known to novice astrologers: Saturn conjunct the South Node. You might be wondering how it could occur in the chart of someone who was at that moment winning $13 million dollars. Saturn was the progressed chart ruler because Capricorn was rising on the Ascendant, so that made it a powerful planet. The South Node is a point of karmic reaping for good or ill, one of the indicators of a milestone or turning point in life. They were also in a money sign – remember that Scorpio is the sign of other people’s money. Jumping back to the 5th house of risks and gambles, we find the North Node trined the progressed East Point, capturing the imagination of the public.

Chiron of triumphant ascendancy and once-in-a-lifetime events, sextiled the progressed Transpluto of payoffs, and progressed Mars, ruler of the Midheaven and 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks.

In the 8th house of lotteries, the transiting East Point conjuncted Saturn, the progressed chart ruler. The transiting Ascendant, Midheaven, Part of Fortune, East Point and Vertex move very quickly, so these are points we use to fine-tune a chart. In the central time zone of the United States, the big drawings are advertised as taking place at 7:45, 9:40, 9:59, 10:00, 10:15, and 10:30 PM (depending on the game, and day of the week they are drawn), but they aren’t necessarily broadcast at those times. We should track the times of broadcast in our location for several weeks to look for consistency. Experiment with casting charts for the advertised times, as well as the actual broadcast times, to fine-tune for tight orbs between the transiting Ascendant, Midheaven, Part of Fortune, East Point and Vertex to winning natal, progressed and harmonic planets, angles and house cusps.

The most important component of the 8th house in this chart was transiting Transpluto of payoffs conjunct the progressed chart ruler, Saturn, by a mere two-minute orb. The transiting Part of Fortune was still within orb of a conjunction to Saturn, and squared the Moon’s Nodes on the cusps of the 5th and 11th houses. The transiting Ascendant sextiled progressed Venus, final dispositor of the progressed chart, the Midheaven at 00 Scorpio 51, and made a square to natal Jupiter (bigger, better, more) in the 11th house of lucky breaks.

We’ve already covered transiting Pluto at the Midheaven and the occupants of the 11th house, so all that’s left is transiting Mercury (retrograde) in conjunction with transiting Uranus, both of which were about two degrees from the Prenatal Lunar Eclipse at 12 Sagittarius 22. They were in a tight trine with progressed Pluto, ruler of the progressed Midheaven and 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks, in the 8th house of lotteries. They also trined the Vertex date with destiny in the 8th house.
