The Arizona Debate 2020
On March 15, 2020, in Phoenix, AZ at 6 PM, Democratic candidates Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden will face off in what may be their next-to-last debate. Reportedly, another will be scheduled, but there are no details yet.
As much as it pains me to say it, I believe Biden will be the winner. I keep asking the Universe to let me rearrange the planets to suit my own wishes, but so far, I’ve still not been allowed.
I think Bernie will come out swinging. There are several guesses, rectifications and instances of hearsay out there, but we don’t have his birth time, which means no Ascendant or Midheaven is available, and in politics, those are crucial. They would tell us whether or not his punches will land. We also don’t have accurate information about his Moon. It could be anywhere from 13 Aries to 25 Aries. In the chart below, it’s only at 19 Aries because that’s where it happened to be at noon – halfway through the day. People with the Moon in Aries are quick tempered, but they get shi*t done. The East Point, Vertex and Part of Fortune are all rendered useless. We have no clue which houses the planets are in, or which they rule. All we have are the effects of transiting planets in aspect to natal planets.
When no birth time is available, I usually use a sunrise chart for ordinary peeps, and noon charts for those who are well-known public figures. Here’s the one I’m using for Bernie surrounded by the transits for the time of the debate:
The first challenge I see in Bernie’s chart is the transiting Sun opposed to his natal Neptune. It clouds the mind and can make us momentarily forgetful, which may be what happened to Biden recently, which I somehow missed until it lit up social media. So if that happens, “Bernie Dementia” will trend on Twitter. It’s nonsense. Another thing the Sun transiting opposite natal Neptune can do is cause mistakes and errors. Seriously. You never make one?
Covid-19 is represented by Neptune (and Pluto represents contagion and pandemic). It could be that the debate will have no live audience, which might make Bernie pretty unhappy (but a lot safer). Transiting Chiron (health and healing) trines his natal Pluto, so that should be some protection.
Not helping his cause at all, transiting Mercury will square his natal Uranus, which will lead some to say that his ideas are “too far out.” They aren’t really; his ideas are already working well in many European countries that consistently rank as the Happiest Countries in the World. Finland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and the Netherlands.
Mercury, which shows how we process information and express ourselves, in square to Uranus can bring one, maybe two days of being brusque or saying something tactless. It’s unfortunate that it makes this aspect on this night, but there are no coincidences in the Universe. Besides, Bernie is a Virgo, and you Virgos know how you are: you’re so analytical you often come off as critical, even if you’re just stating facts. I know. I married two of you. The antidote would be for Bernie to listen to his inner voice, try to relax, and allow his own particular genius to shine. Also, he should drive with more caution than usual. This could be a fender bender waiting to happen.
But that’s probably not going to happen because also on Debate Night, transiting Mars, representing aggression, anger and competition, may square Bernie’s natal Moon in Aries, which is disposited by Mars. And they say women are too emotional. It’s stressed, argumentative and over-reacts. If that’s not bad enough – and it’s plenty already – transiting Mars will square his natal Mars. That’s a battle, a confrontation. It lacks patience and will call out BS in a heartbeat.
Transiting Jupiter, which is traveling together with Mars that night, also squares Bernie’s natal Mars. Because Jupiter expands and enlarges everything it aspects, it increases his rash irritability. With this aspect Bernie could become his own worst enemy for a few days. A little bit of good news is that Mars and Jupiter together are like the Energizer Bunny, industriousness and stamina just go on and on and on. They don’t just square the natal Mars (and maybe the Moon), though. They also make a trine to Bernie’s natal North Node. The Moon’s Nodes represent milestones reached or turning points in a matter, so that’s a good aspect, and some protection from the more difficult transits.
Here’s the thing. Transits like this last a day or two at most. A person can be in a long-term up-cycle and still have a rotten day once in a while. Even someone in a long-term down-cycle gets a break now and then. Bernie has a lot of good up-cycle long-term aspects in his future. Transiting Pluto (power to transform) is about to trine his natal Saturn (building, structure, engineering, agriculture) and his natal Neptune (dreams, visions, inspiration). He’ll have long-term ability to put his ideals to real work.
Transiting Mars will trine his Neptune (charities, institutions, hospitals, health care) and his Saturn (ambition, success with structuring) before transiting Jupiter does, and bring good judgment, common sense and courage. When transiting Jupiter trines Saturn and Neptune, Bernie will be able to bring his ideals and visions into fruition. But there are a couple bumps in the road.
Transiting Neptune will square Bernie’s natal Uranus most of this year and into 2021. It’s an aspect of a sincere and passionate desire to help people, but it can be a tad unrealistic. On the other hand, it’s in effect at the same time that transiting Mars, Jupiter and Pluto make trines to his natal Neptune (dreams) and Saturn (become reality). He’ll be willing and capable of working hard to make them happen.
There is one more square coming up – between transiting Uranus and natal Pluto – but I’m going to save that for my next post. Let’s go see how Joe Biden will perform in the debate.
My first impression? Caspar Milquetoast. Milquetoast is an old-fashioned reference about a bland sort of guy. Or in this case, debate.
We have Biden’s birth time, so it will be much easier to see what’s going on in his chart.
The transiting Sun (vitality, will, ego) will form a trine with Biden’s natal Jupiter, the ruler of his natal Ascendant. That’s always favorable. It will also trine its own natal place, as well as natal Venus. That’s a lot of manna from heaven for not much effort. In addition, transiting Mars (assertion, aggression, effort) will trine his Midheaven – the area that represents his career, reputation, status and brand. That’s the good news for Biden on that night. But it’s not the whole story.
Transiting Jupiter (good fortune, expansion) has also been making a trine to his Midheaven recently, giving him a lot of momentum. That aspect is waning now, and some of that momentum may be lost. Jupiter is Biden’s natal chart ruler because he has Sagittarius rising.
Transiting Mercury (communication, speeches, debates) conjuncts Biden’s South Node, marking a turning point in a matter. I don’t necessarily subscribe to the theory that the South Node is always negative; I’ve seen too many lottery winners helped along by it. But the South Node is associated with resting on one’s laurels and not really moving forward, not trying anything new. The North Node means taking a leap of faith even though it’s scary. The South Node means doing things the way you’ve always done them because it’s easy and feels safe.
I touched briefly on Mercury squaring Bernie’s natal Uranus and how it could mean one or two days of being brusque or saying something tactless. Because Uranus is a relatively slow moving planet and Biden was born just over a year after Bernie, he will also experience the effects of the square just a couple days later, most likely on March 17, the day of the Arizona Primary.
Transiting Venus opposes Biden’s natal Mars on Debate Day. I suppose it could represent sexual tension, as he does have a habit of inappropriate touching, but it might be as simple as just not getting what he wants. Besides making a trine to the Midheaven, transiting Mars also sextiles his natal Mercury, which indicates mental agility and adequate responses. Mars represents physical energy and is in Biden’s 12th house of isolation. Venus, ruler of his 6th house of health enters his 6th house a couple of days before.
But. And there’s always a but, right? As mentioned earlier, transits like this last a day or two at most. A person can be in a long-term up-cycle and still have a rotten day once in a while. Even someone in a long-term down-cycle gets a break now and then. Biden has been getting a break recently, but he has some pretty heavy long-term transits coming up. Pluto will oppose natal Jupiter, which is a callous desire to exploit the masses and grab power for oneself. It’s just more Plutocracy. Pluto is ruthless in its power, more than any other planet, and its method is often subterfuge. Like someone else we all know and loathe, this aspect develops a superiority complex and doesn’t give a damn about the rights of others; all that matters is winning. The extreme effort can cause one to believe or behave as if they are above the law. Even if you’re not an astrologer, you might perceive a bit of this aspect surrounding Biden in the way that his supporters adamantly believe that only he can take on Trump. I’m going to start calling this the “Winning is Everything” aspect. Used correctly, it does give leadership ability and good organizational skills. Let’s see what else is coming up for Biden in the long run.
Transiting Jupiter also opposes its own natal position. One of the things this aspect does is make us feel we can do anything we want, but it’s often over-confident and attracts powerful competitors. It’s important for Biden to avoid lawsuits while Pluto and Jupiter oppose his natal Jupiter.
In February 2021, transiting Saturn will oppose Biden’s natal Pluto. The kind of energy this produces is similar to that which caused Trump to be impeached (Pluto opposed to his Saturn), gave rise to Covid-19 (Saturn conjunct Pluto) and caused the stock market to crash (also Saturn conjunct Pluto) both in 1929 and recently. Oppositions are conflicts with others. Enemies crawl out of the woodwork like cockroaches. This aspect causes an enormous amount of stress and the burden of overwhelming responsibility. I wish I could recall who the astrologer was who said it, but sadly I don’t. S/he said (I'm paraphrasing), "When looking at charts to see who will win the Presidency, don’t look for the one with the best aspects; look for the one with the worst year ahead." Saturn opposed to Pluto could certainly qualify for that. However...
This opposition is a 14-year cycle, one that marks the culmination of a singular effort toward one goal. There are still no guarantees of success. Of hard rows to hoe, this is among the hardest. It’s just as capable of bringing failure and disappointment as it is of bringing power. We must be prepared to cut our losses and move on. I’ll be looking at this aspect when I read the charts for Election Day and Inauguration Day to see how the aspect is aspected. There’s also some fascinating aspects in Bernie’s chart, and I’ll soon be writing about why we shouldn’t count him out just yet.
I have to be off now so I can go vote today.
