Subject E Secondary Progressions

In the progressed chart of Subject E at the time of her $3.3 million dollar windfall, we see that the Sun and Mercury were in mutual reception, and that the progressed Moon was just leaving an opposition to the progressed Sun, making it a full Moon chart. Just as a full Moon in the lunar cycle, these periods tend to be eventful and often dramatic. Both the Sun and Moon squared the Ascendant / Descendant axis, making it a personal matter. The Moon ruled the loaded 8th house of lotteries.

Jupiter, the chart ruler, was in the 6th house, but only by three minutes, so we need to take that into consideration. It squared the Moon’s Nodes, which occupied the 2nd house of money and the 8th house of lotteries, where Pluto conjuncted the South Node. People with Pluto, planet of powerful and complete transformation in conjunction with a lunar Node, are destined to experience great changes of fortune because the Nodes trigger turning points and milestones in our lives.

Mars, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles, trined Transpluto of payoffs in the 8th house of lotteries. Mars also trined and sextiled the Midheaven / Nadir axis.

Venus, in its own sign, ruler of the Midheaven, as well as the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks, conjuncted the Midheaven, where it sextiled Mars, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles.

Saturn, ruler of the 2nd house of money, trined the Part of Fortune conjunct the Descendant. It also sextiled and trined the Ascendant / Descendant axis, affecting Subject E personally.

Chiron of triumphant ascendancy and once-in-a-lifetime events, and the East Point, which represents matters that capture public imagination, were conjunct, and square the Midheaven / Nadir axis.

There were so many interesting things that happened in the comparison of the progressed chart to the natal chart of Subject E, that some could easily be overlooked. We see immediately that progressed Mercury, Pluto, and the South Node conjunct the natal Midheaven, which was also where the Prenatal Lunar Eclipse took place (21 Leo 14).

Progressed Mars in the 1st house trined the natal Sun, ruler of the natal Midheaven, an aspect that creates palpable physical excitement about one’s path in life, as well as energizing the public’s perception of her. Don’t forget that the natal Sun was the final dispositor of the natal chart, which is a powerful condition. In an aspect of reciprocity, the progressed Sun also sextiled natal Mars.

Let’s turn our attention to progressed Mercury for a moment. Mercury and the Sun are in mutual reception in the progressed chart. Subject E was 39 years old at the time of the win. Note that the progressed Mercury was almost conjunct the natal Mercury. It turned retrograde the year that she was three, and turned direct the year that she was 27. It didn’t become partile with its natal place until April 29, 1993, sixteen months after her win. Nevertheless, horseshoes and hand grenades; it didn’t have to be perfect; it was close enough. Mercury ruled the natal 8th house of lotteries, and 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks. It also sextiled the natal Vertex date with destiny in the 8th house.

The progressed Moon trined the natal Ascendant and natal Mars, the chart co-ruler. It was within orb of a trine to natal Uranus, ruler of the Nadir, in the 8th house of lotteries.

Jupiter, ruler of the 2nd house of money, squared the natal Moon’s Nodes, natal Pluto, the natal Midheaven, and the Prenatal Lunar Eclipse. The square to the Moon’s Nodes described the kind of turning point or milestone that occurred. Jupiter also trined natal Neptune, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles. Just short of 21 degrees Taurus (a money sign), it was in a wide trine with the natal Moon in the 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks.

Like math, the consistent motion of the planets is a universal language. If we reduced our reply to the question, “What does Jupiter square Pluto mean?” to a shorthand definition, it might be “The Lord giveth (Jupiter) and the Lord taketh away (Pluto).” For most of us who haven’t gone from rags to riches, Jupiter is just as likely to bring legal matters as it is windfalls, and when that’s the case, this is a particularly ugly aspect. It represents an abuse of power, coercion, manipulation, dominance, a struggle to seize control, and resistance. Doesn’t sound like a lucky aspect, does it? It’s not, and we’ll find that many of these winners were suffering the effects of a debilitating aspect or two at the time they won. Remember this one: Jupiter, which represents legal matters, and which concerned the 2nd house of money, squared Pluto, chart ruler, in the 9th house of legal matters, planet of loss and rebirth. The progressed Moon, which is so important as a timing device, ruled the 9th house of legal matters, and was in the 4th house of home, family and domestic matters. We’ll come back to it in later chapters.

Progressed Uranus, ruler of the 4th house, sextiled Jupiter, ruler of the 2nd house of money. As usual, flowing aspects between Jupiter (bigger, better, more) and Uranus (sudden, unexpected changes of fortune) helped bring a win. Don’t give up if neither Jupiter nor Uranus are aspecting each other in your chart. Are either of them aspecting any of your angles, chart ruler, Midheaven ruler, or the cusps or rulers of your winning houses?

Neptune, ruler of the 5th house, sextiled natal Pluto, the chart ruler, the South Node, the Midheaven and the Prenatal Lunar Eclipse. It also trined and sextiled the natal Moon’s Nodes, which were conjunct the natal Midheaven / Nadir axis.

We’ve covered the rulers of the winning houses, so let’s look at the 2nd house of money where the progressed East Point (capturing public imagination) conjuncted the natal Part of Fortune. We’re not going to count the progressed Chiron conjunction to its own place, because like outer planets, it’s never going to progress very far from its natal position, however, it was closing in on a tighter conjunction to the Part of Fortune.

The progressed Vertex date with destiny trined the natal East Point in the 1st house.

The progressed Part of Fortune activated the cusp of the 8th house of lotteries.

Viewing the transits to the progressed chart of Subject E, we find that most of the action was in the 1st and 8th houses. Transiting Mercury (in mutual reception with, and square, transiting Jupiter), conjuncted the progressed Ascendant. Beware of Mercury and Jupiter aspects afflicting the Ascendant; sometimes it means you’re being subpoenaed or served other types of legal documents. Mercury rules documents, and Jupiter, of course, can represent legal matters. In this instance, Mercury ruled both legal houses—the 7th and 9th—and Jupiter, the chart ruler, had recently conjuncted Subject E’s natal Sun, ruler of the 9th house, in the 9th house. The transiting Sun squared the progressed Midheaven of destiny and the path forward.

Transiting Mercury also squared the progressed Sun and full Moon, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries. It opposed the angular Part of Fortune. The transiting Part of Fortune made the same aspects, including an opposition to its own natal place.

  • Mercury ruled the progressed Descendant (marriage and partnerships, certainly; also, agents and those who represent us, opponents, known enemies, frenemies and legal matters).
  • Mercury also ruled the progressed 9th house of legal matters, where Virgo was intercepted, showing the issue would take a long time to work out, and require a disproportionate amount of attention, which should have come to a head with transiting Mercury’s arrival at the Ascendant.

The transiting Sun, also ruling the 9th house, conjuncted the East Point, which drew public notice to the 1st house of identity. In addition, the Sun conjuncted Chiron of triumphant ascendancy and once-in-a-lifetime events, and squared the progressed Midheaven.

The transiting Moon, ruler of the 8th house of lotteries, was just separating from a trine with progressed Jupiter, the chart ruler.

Saturn ruled the 2nd house of money, and transited the 2nd house. It opposed progressed Transpluto of payoffs in the 8th house of lotteries, and sextiled progressed Mars, ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles.

Transiting Mars, ruler of the 5th house, sextiled and trined the Moon’s Nodes in the 2nd and 8th houses of money.

  • It also trined progressed Pluto in the 8th. Transiting Transpluto of payoffs, and the East Point, which draws public attention, were conjunct Pluto of wealth and transformation.
  • Mars also made an inconjunct to progressed Jupiter, the chart ruler. As mentioned before, Jupiter was only three minutes into the 6th house. We don’t have this information, but it’s possible that the inconjunct may indicate a separation from employment, and adjustments to the daily routine.
  • Finally, transiting Mars sextiled progressed Neptune in the 10th house, which may indicate acting on a hunch, as well as a public display of powerful emotions.

Venus ruled the Midheaven and 11th house of plot twists and lucky breaks. Transiting Venus squared progressed Mercury, and trined the progressed Vertex date with destiny, both in the 8th house of lotteries.

Transiting Uranus and transiting Saturn were in mutual reception, but then Saturn was in its own sign, Aquarius, of which it’s the ancient ruler. That does little to sort out the fact that transiting Uranus squared progressed Saturn, ruler of the 2nd house of money. In fact, Subject E was in the midst of the proverbial “midlife crisis,” which is a time when Pluto and Neptune square their own natal places, and Uranus opposes its own natal place. We all—men and women—experience this challenging transitional period. It seems like an especially fun time to have a lot of disposable income at hand. There’s nothing like being able to afford that little red sports car! Transiting Chiron, of triumphant ascendancy and rewards, conjuncted progressed Transpluto of payoffs in the 8th house of lotteries. The transiting Vertex date with destiny opposed its own natal place.
