Hopefully, if you’re
reading this, you already know the basics of astrology. If not, then
take a look at a directed chart next to a natal chart so you can see
that the directed planets and angles have maintained the exact same
distances from each other that they held in the natal chart. The
difference is that they have moved through the signs of the zodiac.
We do not read the aspects of planets and points to each other in the
directed chart since they are the same as in the natal, but we do
compare the directed chart to the natal chart because having moved
through signs, the planets and points form aspects to the
stationary natal chart. These aspects indicate events we can
expect to occur in the year of life we choose to examine.
Solar arc directions
move everything in the natal chart forward by the exact same rate—the
rate that the secondary progressed Sun moves in twenty-four hours.
Confused now? The rate of the secondary progressed Sun is the
distance in degrees, minutes and seconds that the Sun moves in one
day. There are many ways to find this distance, but they are beyond
the scope of this chapter. This distance is usually just less than
one degree. For instance, the Sun at the time of birth for Subject A
was 03 degrees, 15 minutes, and 06 seconds into Taurus. Twenty-four
hours later, the Sun was 04 degrees, 13 minutes, and 32 seconds into
Taurus, a distance of 58 minutes and 26 seconds. We then take that
rate, the one of 58’ and 26”, and use it to progress everything
in the chart. But every day has its own rate, and we want to use the
distance not of the date of birth, but instead for the day
that represents the number of years in age for the future time we
wish to see. Subject A was 46 years and some months of age when she
won the lottery. So we would find her birth date in the ephemeris,
count down 46 days (which corresponds to June 9, 1950 in this case)
and find the distance the Sun moved between that day and the next.
Fortunately, we can use astrology software, which is so much faster
and easier, but it’s important to understand the principle behind
the process. One degree rises on the natal Ascendant every four
minutes, and in any study of solar arc directions, we are warned that
one degree on the directed Ascendant or Midheaven = one year.
That’s how far off predictions can be for just four minutes of
inaccuracy in birth time, and in more than 35 years of practicing
astrology, I have always prescribed to that theory. However,
in lottery astrology, we’ll see again and again that both applying
and separating aspects with orbs of up to four degrees or so are
still valid. Don’t take my word for it; see for yourself. The
planets are neutral and without personal opinion; they are constant
and consistent, and neither lie nor cheat. It is we who make the
mistake of limiting ourselves with rules.
The solar arc
directions as stand-alone charts are provided for those who may be
inexperienced with reading concentric rings, or who may need larger
fonts.
