Before I show you an example of why you absolutely, positively should be reading transits to progressions, let’s take the mystery out of progressions. If you’re learning astrology, you read transits to the natal chart all the time, right? You’ve probably read hundreds of them by now. Well, you read progressions to the natal exactly the same way, except instead of representing one day, they represent one year. Now how hard is that?
The only thing you’ll notice different between transits to the natal, and progressions to the natal, is that in progressions, the outer planets - Jupiter through Pluto - never move more than a couple of degrees from their natal places. Therefore, you don’t even have to bother with them unless they have moved enough to make an exact aspect with another planet or an angle—say within a minute or two of partile (partile means exact). Here’s a list of things to watch for when reading progressions to the natal chart:
1) The angles. Always the most powerful positions for planets to be in, regardless of which side of it they’re on. Look to see if the progressed Ascendant and progressed Midheaven are making any close aspects to any natal angles, planets, nodes, or points.
2) Check to see if the progressed personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) are making any close aspects to any natal angles, planets, nodes, or points.
3) Check to see if any progressed planets or angles are changing signs or houses.
4) The Moon is the fastest “planet” in the progressed chart, moving approximately one degree per month. As it moves around the chart and makes aspects to other progressed and natal planets, it activates them.
I've seen some crazy prices for these on Amazon. Shop carefully, or better yet, buy them from your local brick and mortar bookstore for around $20.
There’s another very helpful predictive method similar to Secondary Progressions called Solar Arc Directions. They are read the same way, and they are also for one year. The difference between progressions and directions is:
- Secondary Progressions advance everything in the chart by their individual rates of movement in 24 hours. 1 Day = 1 Year in your life. If you want to know what will happen to you when you are 25, then in your ephemeris, begin counting the day after your birth, and stop when you reach 25. Compare the planets positions on that day to your natal planets. There are several places online that will cast your progressed chart for free. Astro.com is very popular, and my personal favorite.
- Solar Arc Directions advance everything in the chart based on the "movement " of the sun in one day, thus the term Solar Arc.
I probably need to create some posts on progressions and directions, but for now, I only want to whet your appetite and let you see why you should be using them and why you should be reading the transits to them.

Here’s an example, taken from the data files of the late Lois Rodden, who was the High Priestess of Data. This is the natal chart of a man who won a million dollars on a slot machine in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

His natal chart is fairly lucky to begin with:
- Part of Fortune conjunct the Ascendant
- The North Node conjunct the Midheaven
- Venus on the cusp of the 8th house, which is the house of “Other People’s Money,” including community property, lotteries, football pools (and the like), taxes, insurance, 401Ks, pensions, social security, welfare, stocks, investments, and inheritance (and I have undoubtedly left out a few).
- Vertex (a date with destiny) in the 5th house of risks and gambles (also known as the house of children, creativity, hobbies, entertainment, vacations, romances, and taking chances).
- The chart is full of sextiles and trines with only one square (between Saturn and Chiron), and one opposition (between Retrograde Venus and Pluto). Ah! But notice that the opposition lies across the cusps of the 2nd house of money and the 8th house of Other People’s Money.
Does that mean if your chart has more squares and oppositions and fewer trines and sextiles that you can’t be as lucky? No, it doesn’t.
TRANSITING PLANETS TO THE NATAL CHART

Above are the transits to the natal chart at the time and place he won.
Outlined in teal blue, notice the transiting Sun conjunct the natal Ascendant. Whenever the Sun transits the Ascendant, it’s like getting a second birthday that year.
Outlined in purple, the transiting Moon conjoined natal Jupiter, the Santa Claus of the zodiac, the planet of bigger, better, more, expansion, excess, hope, optimism, and joy.
Outlined in pink, transiting Venus was just a hair past the conjunction to the natal Pluto / Venus opposition. I can hear you now: “But oppositions aren’t good!” That’s part of the art of interpretation. Venus activated that opposition across the two money houses, and you can see the result.
Venus also squares Chiron in the 11th house of sudden surprises and changes in fortune. Study Chiron if you wish, but I am still unconvinced as to its true meaning. I know it is activated regularly in all kinds of charts, and in all kinds of ways, so I use it to see what occurs with it. Maybe someday it will hit me and I’ll go voila! (I did go voila! while researching the book! Keep using Chiron.)
In red, transiting Mars conjoined Uranus, which happens to be the ruler of the 8th house of Other People’s Money, as well as the dispositor of both benefics, Venus and Jupiter.
Outlined in yellow, transiting Jupiter, transiting Saturn, and the transiting Vertex (date with destiny) conjoined the natal Mars, which happens to be the ruler of the Midheaven (the limelight, the public perception of us, and our path in life). It also co-rules the 5th house of gambling and chances.
Circled n turquoise, transiting Uranus, the planet of rock and roll; changes in fortune, of the sudden, unexpected and accidental; the one that never conforms and always shakes things up, is in the 5th house of gambling and chances, and trines the natal ascendant, where the transiting Sun is providing a "second birthday."
Finally, the transiting Ascendant and East Point (personal matters that take place in public) conjoined the winner’s Midheaven in lime green. Remember that events in the life will be reflected in the natal chart at least three ways (the more, the better). This chart shows eight ways that July 18, 1981 was a lucky day for this man.
But...would you look at those charts and know that he was going to win a bunch of money? Maybe if he had been playing golf, he would have made a hole-in-one. Maybe if he had been fishing, he would have caught a blue marlin. Maybe it was his wedding day. How do you look at the chart and see beyond the “lucky day” to“lucky how?”
That’s where progressions come in. For an event in the life to manifest, the chart must reflect it in at least three ways. When it is found in the progressions and directions, that is further confirmation, and helps you to narrow down what will happen.
THE SECONDARY PROGRESSED CHART
Here is the progressed chart of our winner. What stands out?
There is a yod between Pluto (planet of wealth and power; also a ruler of an angle -- the I.C.), Neptune (planet of fairy tales and dreams; also the ruler of the 8th house), and the Moon (in the 8th house). Yods are considered to be the Hand of God or Finger of Fate by most astrologers.
Because the Moon rules the 12th house of confinement and seclusion, maybe the man needed surgery that year (8th house / 12th house matters). Especially since Saturn is opposed to the Moon (a boomerang yod) and rules his 6th house of health and employment. We don’t know that this did or didn't happen, but it is not mentioned in the Lois Rodden data base.
There is also a trine between Jupiter (bigger, better, more) which is conjunct an angle, and Neptune (planet of “is it real?”) which is the ruler of the 8th house. Besides being the house of Other People’s Money, the 8th is also the house of surgery. The trine from Jupiter would indicate a good outcome.
Let’s see what happens when we place these progressions around the natal chart.

The very first thing that caught my attention (in purple), was progressed Jupiter (bigger, better, more) conjunct natal Venus (the Planet of Pleasant: money, love, beauty, harmony, happiness). That is definitely confirmation of the financial gain indicated by the transits.
Venus is the Lesser Benefic and Jupiter is the Greater Benefic.
Benefic: doing or promoting some good;
beneficent: a benefic truce; a benefic confluence of planets.
And where are they? On the cusp of the 8th house of Other People’s Money. Planets tend to gain strength when they are on a house cusp, particularly in the Porphyry house system.
Next, in hot pink, is the progressed Moon at the apex of the yod opposing the natal (and progressed) Saturn. There are other aspects involving Saturn that we’ll talk about later.
In teal blue, the progressed Mars conjoined the South Node of the Moon, and the South Node of the Moon conjoined Mars. They are right on the cusp of the Nadir, which makes them angular, and therefore, strong. Mars is the ruler of the Midheaven (public standing) and co-ruler of the 5th house of risks and gambles.
Finally, in yellow, the progressed East Point (personal matters that take place in public) trines the natal Vertex (date with destiny) in the 5th house.
TRANSITS TO THE PROGRESSED CHART
Here is what catches the eye first: Circled in hot pink, transiting Venus, the Lesser Benefic (Planet of Pleasant: money, love, beauty, harmony, happiness) is conjunct the progressed Ascendant (you, here and now).
Outlined in teal blue, transiting Jupiter (Greater Benefic, bigger, better, more) and Saturn (responsibility, ambition, tradition, structure) and the Vertex (date with destiny) all conjunct the progressed South Node (reaping what you’ve sown) in the 2nd house of money.
In a kind of periwinkle color, transiting Neptune (“Is it real?”) conjoins progressed Chiron (triumphant ascendancy) on the cusp of the 5th house of gambling and chances.
In orange, the transiting Midheaven (being in the public eye) is conjunct the progressed Vertex (date with destiny), also in the 5th house of gambling.

In yellow, the transiting South Node (reaping what you’ve sown) is:
- Conjunct progressed Venus (sugar and spice and all that's nice), which is the ruler of the progressed Midheaven (public eye)
- Conjunct progressed Mercury (communication, rational thought), which is the ruler of the 2nd house of money and the 11th house of sudden events and changes of fortune..
In turquoise, the transiting East Point (personal matters that take place in public) is conjunct the progressed North Node (another benefic), right on the cusp of the 8th house (Other People’s Money).
And finally, in his favorite color -- red -- Mars (action, initiative) is conjunct Uranus (changes in fortune) in the 11th house of sudden events.
SOLAR ARC DIRECTIONS
This is also a chart that represents one year in the life. Look carefully and you will see that the planets are in exactly the same positions they hold in the natal chart, and they maintain exactly the same relationships (aspects) to each other. What has changed are the degrees and signs they occupy. The degrees and signs on the wheel have changed, too. The reason for this is that everything in the directed chart has been moved by the same rate of speed, which is the rate that the sun moves in one day (therefore, “Solar Arc”).
Now let’s see what happens when we compare these positions to the natal positions.

Two things jump out at me here. The first, in hot pink, is the directed Venus (Lesser Benefic, money, love, beauty, harmony, happiness) making a nice trine to the natal Part of Fortune.
And then in teal blue, we have natal Saturn under attack from directed Pluto by conjunction, and opposed by directed Venus.
Keep in mind that aspects can manifest in various ways. Not every aspect at the time of a win is about the win. People still have other things going on in their lives. The reason I'm even mentioning this aspect between these three is that:

Anyway, the accepted (and often staunchly defended) rule about progressions and directions is that they are only active while they are applying within one degree, exact, and done by the time they reach one degree of separation. Play by the rules if you want, but I color outside the lines and I don't think there's much doubt that the Sun trine Uranus was active in this case.

- The Sun rules the natal 2nd house of money and resources. It's transiting the natal 8th.
- Uranus rules the natal 8th house of Other People's Money. It's transiting the natal 1st.

In red, the natal Moon is under attack from directed Saturn. I told you earlier that we’d talk more about Saturn.
Every planet has a “positive” side and a “negative” side. The positive use of Saturn is ambition, responsibility, executive ability, and tradition. The negative side brings sorrow, suffering and self-undoing. Saturn isn’t particularly well placed in this chart. For one thing, it’s in the 3rd house of the rational mind and ability to communicate, in the sign of Virgo, which can make it austere, silent, uncommunicative, and highly critical. It’s in mutual reception with Mercury, which doubles those tendencies. He’s smart, there’s no doubt about that; he could even be a doctor or CPA. His is a serious mind. His entire chart has a Capricorn signature, so he has leadership ability, but his personal life may suffer.
Secondly, his Saturn rules the 7th house of marriage and partnership, which shows the area of life where these challenges will be played out (and it co-rules the 8th). The 7th might also represent the public in general.
And finally, his Saturn is opposed by his retrograde Venus in Aquarius. Venus, the planet that describes our loving nature, is not at its warmest in Aquarius. It’s highly independent and needs a lot of freedom. It’s more of a “let’s be friends” type. Couple that with the retrograde tendency to turn things inward, and I’m betting this man is a little hard to get close to.
On top of that, his Ascendant (his outward personality, the way others see him, or the way he wishes to be seen) is in Cancer, which can be domestic-minded, but clingy, moody, and as changeable as the tides. (so a dichotomy compared to his freedom-loving Venus). He has a real affinity to tides, and probably bought a boat with his winnings.
The Moon, ruler of Cancer, is his chart ruler. It's placed in Capricorn, disposited by Saturn, which is the most difficult sign for the Moon to be in. Those moods can be quite dark, and his emotional nature quite chilly. So now, in this year, he has directed Pluto conjunct his natal Saturn, and Pluto is the Great Eliminator. It removes things from our lives. I cannot be certain because no mention of it was made in the data base from which I fetched this man, but I’m willing to bet that this was a year in which he lost his wife either by death or divorce.

Outlined in orange, in the 2nd house of money, the transiting Part of Fortune is in a powerful conjunction with Jupiter (bigger, better, more), Saturn (in this case, responsibility, I think), and the Vertex (date with destiny), all in sextile to natal Uranus (sudden changes in fortune). Uranus happens to be conjoined by the North Node (another beneficent) outlined in navy blue. Notice that Uranus is the ruler of the 7th house of marriage and partnership, and that transiting Uranus squares the directed Moon, ruler of the 12th house of sorrows and seclusion.
The transiting Moon squares the Moon’s Nodes, which are always activated during important events in the life. They represent milestones and turning points, and are associated with fateful events. I'm not sure what color the lines are. A deep red, maybe?
Circled in turquoise, the transiting Midheaven (public image) is in the 5th house of gambling and chances. The transiting Ascendant (you, here and now) and East Point (personal matters that take place in public) are in the 8th house (Other People’s Money), strengthened by being on the house cusp.
And finally, follow the purple line from transiting Mars (action, initiative) to trine the directed Moon, Mercury, and mostly the Sun (37 minutes past exact). The sun is the ruler of the directed Ascendant (you, here and now).
LUNAR ECLIPSE
A Lunar Eclipse at 24 Capricorn 31 occurred on July 16, 1981 at 8:39 PM PDT
Eclipses are powerful triggers of our fate. I won’t say that coincidentally there just happened to be an eclipse only 40 hours before this man won a million dollars, because in astrology, there are no coincidences. Everything happens exactly when it’s meant to happen.
The Lunar Eclipse on July 16, 1981 at 8:39 PM PDT, fell across this man’s Ascendant / Descendant axis, and conjoined his natal Moon, the ruler of his Ascendant. The transiting Sun, ruler of his 2nd house of money conjoined his Ascendant. Transiting Mars, ruler of the Midheaven (limelight, public recognition) conjuncted his natal Uranus, ruler of his 8th house of Other People's Money.
